Marcus Rashford struck twice as Barcelona opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win at Newcastle, extending their strong record against English opposition to 13 victories in 17 meetings.

A charged St. James’ Park atmosphere spurred the Magpies into a fast start, with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes spurning big chances before the visitors grew into the game.

After the break, Rashford made the difference, first with a precise header from Jules Kounde’s cross, then with a thunderous solo strike that left Nick Pope stranded.

Anthony Gordon’s late finish gave Newcastle hope, but Barcelona stood firm to secure the points, leaving Eddie Howe’s side with just one win in five matches across all competitions this season.
