Real Madrid have completed the signing of left-back Álvaro Carreras from Benfica in a deal worth €50 million.
The 22-year-old has signed a six-year contract running until 2031 and will be officially presented to fans on Tuesday afternoon.
Madrid activated Carreras’ release clause and will pay the fee in instalments following negotiations with the Portuguese club.
Manchester United, who sold Carreras to Benfica in January after initially signing him from Madrid’s academy in 2020, will earn around €8.8 million from the deal due to a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
Carreras returns to Madrid after impressing at Benfica, where he moved permanently following a loan spell from United.
He previously spent time on loan at Preston North End and Granada but never made a senior appearance for United.
The move comes as Madrid continue reshaping their squad under new head coach Xabi Alonso, having already signed Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool, Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, and 17-year-old Franco Mastantuono from River Plate.
