Alhaji Lateef kayode Jakande (LKJ) would have turned 95 years today July 23, 2025 but even in death, one can hardly forget this quintessential politician; a man of character and integrity.
As we commemorate the 95th birthday of Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande (LKJ), we are reminded of a time in Nigeria’s history when governance was characterized by integrity, vision, and a commitment to the common good. LKJ, who served as the Governor of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983, left behind a legacy of transformative leadership that stands in stark contrast to the current state of affairs in Nigeria, where many leaders appear more like emperors than public servants.
It’s over four decades since the charismatic Lateef Jakande left office as the first civilian governor of Lagos State. Despite serving for only four years and three months, his indelible footprints remain etched in the history of Nigeria. LKJ’s administration was characterized by monumental development strides, with a focus on education, infrastructure, rural development, and the inception of the Lagos metro line project. One can hardly forget this quintessential politician; a man of character and integrity. He set a legacy and pace with his unique style of leadership, a fine administrator whose name would continue to be remembered for generations unborn. Truly, LKJ is the true architect who design Lagos. His administration made Lagos what it is today and with no record of public fund embezzlement. He served with transparency and desire to serve the people.
In an era when the political landscape is riddled with a lack of accountability and self-serving motives, LKJ’s tenure serves as a poignant reminder of what is possible when leaders prioritize the needs of their constituents over personal gain. His policies on free primary and secondary education, coupled with extensive infrastructural development, laid the groundwork for a modern Lagos that continues to benefit citizens today. His understanding of the sociological needs of the people he governed was unparalleled; he recognized that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering empowerment.
In stark contrast, the present political climate is often marred by leaders who enrich themselves at the expense of the populace. They are more focused on personal luxury and political machinations than on the welfare of the common man. This trend of self-interest and neglect has resulted in a nation where the cries for transformative leadership grow louder amidst the deafening silence of those in power. The question arises: where are the leaders who will take a page from Jakande’s book—leaders who will embody the doctrine of “the greatest good for the greatest number”?
LKJ’s approach to governance was deeply rooted in the principles of utilitarianism, a philosophy advocating that actions are right if they benefit the majority. He understood that true leadership is not about amassing wealth or power but about serving the people. In his short tenure, he implemented policies that not only addressed immediate needs but also laid a foundation for long-term growth and development. His legacy is a testament to the impact of selfless leadership, one that contemporary politicians should aspire to emulate.
As we reflect on LKJ’s contributions, it becomes crucial to question why Nigeria continues to elect leaders who prioritize their interests above the needs of the people. The allure of monetary incentives during elections often clouds the judgment of voters, leading to the selection of representatives who perpetuate a cycle of corruption and misgovernance. It is essential for Nigerians to recognize that transformational leadership requires a commitment to integrity, transparency, and service—qualities that LKJ exemplified throughout his life.
In honoring the memory of Lateef Kayode Jakande, we must also challenge ourselves to seek out and support leaders who are dedicated to the principles of justice, fairness, and the common good. It is time to reject the notion that we must settle for less and demand leaders who will prioritize the welfare of the people they serve. LKJ’s legacy is a call to action for all Nigerians to seek out those who govern not for personal gain but for the betterment of society.
As we remember this great leader, let us pledge to keep his spirit alive by advocating for responsible governance, demanding accountability, and seeking leaders who will truly serve the people. May the legacy of Lateef Jakande continue to inspire future generations, reminding us all of the profound impact that selfless leadership can have on society.
