RIVER HELD

Club Atlético River Plate missed the chance to secure a place in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup after a goalless draw with Monterrey in Pasadena.

The Argentinians went close in both halves, with Lucas Martínez Quarta missing a golden chance just before the break and Miguel Borja denied twice late on.

Monterrey, who had drawn with Inter Milan in their opener, threatened early through Sergio Canales and relied on goalkeeper Esteban Andrada to keep them in the game.

River remain unbeaten and top Group E on goal difference ahead of Inter, but must now face the Champions League finalists.

Monterrey, two points behind, face Urawa Red Diamonds next.
