Nigeria’s African Nations Championship campaign ended in embarrassment as Sudan ran riot with a 4-0 demolition in Zanzibar on Tuesday.
Under pressure after a narrow opening loss to Senegal, Eric Chelle’s men collapsed against a Sudanese side that combined relentless pressing with clinical finishing.
The defeat leaves Nigeria bottom of Group D with no points and a goal difference of minus five, confirming their early elimination.
The humiliation began in the 25th minute when Leonard Ngenge, attempting to clear after Abdel Raouf Yagoub struck the post, diverted the ball into his own net.
Just before the break, Ngenge’s nightmare deepened as he conceded a penalty for handball, which Walieldin Khdir blasted into the top corner.
Any faint hope of a fightback was crushed within 10 minutes of the restart. Yagoub doubled Sudan’s lead with a neat left-footed finish from Musa Hussien’s cutback, then added another with a thunderous strike after being left unmarked.
Nigeria’s late push brought little reward, with Raymond Tochukwu’s effort hitting the post and Sudanese keeper Mohamed Abooja dealing with everything else.
Sudan now have four points from two matches and are within touching distance of the knockout stages, while Nigeria’s tournament ends in humiliation, their defensive lapses ruthlessly exposed.
