Aryna Sabalenka retained her US Open title on Saturday, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6(3) to claim her fourth career Grand Slam.

The Belarusian, nicknamed “The Tiger,” showed composure rather than raw aggression in New York, steadying herself in crucial moments to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2014 to defend the Flushing Meadows crown.

Sabalenka, who had suffered final defeats in Melbourne and Paris this year as well as a Wimbledon semi-final loss to Anisimova, regrouped to deliver on the biggest stage. Her victory also marked her 100th career Grand Slam match win.

The world number one endured a tense second set, faltering while serving for the match and handing her opponent a late break. But she recovered to seal the contest with her 19th consecutive tiebreak win.

“I decided I was going to control my emotions and not let them control me,” Sabalenka said. “To bring the fight and handle myself this way in the final means a lot. I’m super proud.”
