Benfica ended a 13-match winless run against Bayern Munich in dramatic fashion, claiming a 1-0 victory in North Carolina to finish top of Group C and hand the German giants their first-ever defeat in the FIFA Club World Cup.
With Bayern already through, Vincent Kompany rang the changes, but it backfired as Benfica seized the initiative.
Ángel Di María tested Manuel Neuer early, before Andreas Schjelderup swept home from a Fredrik Aursnes cutback to give the Portuguese side a deserved lead.
Bayern failed to register a shot on target in the first half, prompting a triple substitution after the break that included Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise.
The changes sparked life into their attack, but goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin stood tall. He produced brilliant stops to deny Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller, and Aleksandar Pavlović in a frenetic second half.
Kimmich thought he’d equalised with a low drive, but the goal was ruled out as Kane was offside and obstructing the keeper.
Trubin’s late save from Sané sealed the win, extending Benfica’s unbeaten run to 16 matches and setting up a likely clash with Chelsea.
Bayern, who had won five in a row before this loss, now prepare to face Flamengo in the next round.
