AC Milan have parted ways with head coach Paulo Fonseca following a lackluster start to the season and are set to appoint fellow Portuguese tactician Sergio Conceição as his replacement, sources have revealed.
Fonseca, 51, who joined Milan in June after leaving Lille, was unable to find consistency during his six-month tenure.
The club’s struggles culminated in a 1-1 draw against Roma on Sunday, marking their sixth league draw this season.
The result left the Rossoneri eighth in Serie A, trailing the top four by eight points, and prompted the club’s decision to seek a managerial change.
The team’s woes extend to Europe, where they sit 12th in the Champions League league phase standings, currently on course for a spot in the knockout play-offs.
Injuries to key players, including USMNT forward Christian Pulisic—Milan’s top scorer in Serie A with five goals—have compounded the team’s challenges.
Milan, owned by U.S. investment firm RedBird Capital, which acquired the club for €1.2 billion in 2022, are banking on Conceição to steer them back on track.
The 50-year-old coach, known for his successful seven-year stint at Porto, where he won 11 trophies including three league titles, has been without a club since leaving the Portuguese giants in the summer.
Conceição is expected to take charge ahead of Milan’s high-stakes clash against Juventus on January 3. Fans will be eager to see if the new appointment can reignite the Rossoneri’s push for domestic and European glory.
