Benjamin Sesko is on the verge of becoming a Manchester United player after turning down a more lucrative offer from Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old Slovenian striker has agreed a five-year contract with United, who will pay RB Leipzig an initial £66.3m plus £7.37m in add-ons.

Sesko landed in the UK on Thursday night and is expected to undergo his medical within the next 48 hours. Newcastle’s proposal, worth £69.7m plus add-ons, was ultimately rejected, with the player making it clear his preference was to join Erik ten Hag’s side.

Leipzig left Sesko out of their pre-season friendly against Atalanta earlier this week, a move that signalled his departure.

Inside the dressing room, he has already bid farewell to teammates, confirming his next step.

The deal was driven by United’s director of football Jason Wilcox and recruitment chief Christopher Vivell, who convinced Sesko of the club’s long-term project.

His arrival could have wider transfer implications, particularly for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, whose future remains uncertain with Liverpool keen on the Swedish striker’s signature.
