Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has conceded that his side’s faint hopes of winning LaLiga are all but over following a shock 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Las Palmas on Saturday.
A last-gasp goal sank third-placed Atleti, who now sit ten points adrift of league leaders Barcelona and three behind second-placed Real Madrid, with just six games left to play.
Speaking after the loss, a frustrated Simeone admitted his team needed a flawless run-in to stay in the race. “If we had any chance of winning the league, we had to get perfect numbers. Today we didn’t,” he said.
Although Atletico looked relatively composed in the first half, they failed to convert their chances.
Simeone lamented a sluggish start to the second half, saying his team simply failed to execute their plans.
With the Copa del Rey and European competitions already out of reach, Saturday’s defeat likely ends Atleti’s final shot at silverware this season.
