Slot Defiant Despite Liverpool’s Heavy Champions League Defeat

Arne Slot says he remains confident in his position despite Liverpool’s alarming 4–1 loss to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, a result that deepened the club’s worst run of form in more than 70 years.

The defeat was Liverpool’s ninth in 12 matches across all competitions and triggered open frustration inside Anfield, where fans jeered the team and empty seats appeared long before the final whistle.

Coming just days after a 3–0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, it marked a third straight loss with 10 goals conceded.

Liverpool fell behind early to Ivan Perisic’s penalty, and although Dominik Szoboszlai briefly levelled, PSV dominated the second half as Guus Til and Couhaib Driouech, who scored twice: sealed a humbling defeat.

It was Liverpool’s second-heaviest European loss and their first home defeat in the Champions League’s opening phase in five years.

Despite growing scrutiny, Slot insisted he still has the backing of Fenway Sports Group. “I am feeling safe, I have a lot of support from above,” he said, while accepting the team must improve sharply.

Former captain Steven Gerrard described the situation as “close to a crisis”, pointing to a collapse in confidence and organisation. Midfielder Curtis Jones admitted he had “no answers” for the team’s struggles.

Liverpool, now 12th in the Premier League and 13th in the Champions League league phase, travel to West Ham United on Sunday with their season in disarray and qualification for the last 16 not guaranteed.
