SLOT: SET-PIECE FOCUS HAS TAKEN JOY OUT OF FOOTBALL.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot says the Premier League’s growing obsession with
set pieces have drained some of the joy from the game, though he accepts it is now
the reality.
Seven of Liverpool’s last nine league goals have come from dead-ball situations,
including three corners in the 5-2 win over West Ham United.
Leaders Arsenal have scored 16 times from corners this season, equalling the
league record.
“First of all, you have to accept it,” Slot said. “If I watch other leagues, I don’t think
there’s so much emphasis on set pieces.”
The Dutchman added, “Do I like it? My football heart doesn’t like it. Now, most of the
games I see in the Premier League are not for me a joy to watch.”
Still, he admitted the competitiveness of the division keeps it compelling and warned
the trend is here to stay.
Liverpool, fifth and pushing for Champions League qualification, face
Wolverhampton Wanderers next, with Florian Wirtz set to miss out through injury.
