SLOVAKIA

Slovakia made history in Bratislava by becoming the first team to beat Germany at home in a World Cup qualifier, claiming a famous 2-0 victory to ignite their push for just a second appearance at the finals.

The hosts matched Germany’s intensity early on, with 18-year-old Leo Sauer causing constant problems down the left.

After several close calls, Slovakia struck just before half-time when David Hancko finished off a flowing move to give his side the lead.

Minutes into the second half, David Strelec doubled the advantage with a stunning curling strike that left Oliver Baumann helpless.

From there, Slovakia defended with discipline, frustrating Julian Nagelsmann’s side, who were restricted to long-range efforts as time slipped away.

The result not only ended Germany’s 17-game unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers on the road but also marked only the fourth defeat in their long history of such matches.

For Slovakia, it was a landmark night that dramatically boosts their chances of reaching the 2026 finals.
