Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has dismissed speculations that governors from the South East have abandoned the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

He emphasized that the governors are actively engaging relevant authorities to secure his release.

Speaking at a media briefing in Umuahia on Thursday night, Otti explained that much of the progress being made cannot be revealed publicly so as not to jeopardize delicate negotiations.

“Some assurances and engagements we’ve had are not for public consumption, as disclosing them might frustrate the process. But take it from me, as his Governor, I am at the forefront of ensuring he comes home. All South East governors are united in this mission,” he stated.

His remarks came on the heels of a protest at the Abia State Government House by Igbo elders, who accused political leaders in the region of abandoning Kanu. The elders urged Otti to mobilize fellow governors to engage President Bola Tinubu directly on the issue.

Governor Otti, however, expressed optimism that ongoing discussions would yield positive results soon.

On the frequent clashes between the Itu community in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State and neighboring communities in Cross River, Otti said his administration is working with Cross River and Akwa Ibom State governments to restore peace. He linked the crisis to reports of natural resources, especially limestone, in the disputed areas.

He revealed that Abia’s Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, has been in Abuja leading negotiations with representatives from the neighboring states.

“Reassure our displaced people that they have not been abandoned. Very soon, they will return to their ancestral homes,” Otti assured.

The Governor also pledged to remain focused on rebuilding Abia State. He vowed not to yield to blackmail, stressing that while he welcomes constructive criticism, politically motivated attacks and distortions of facts would not distract his administration.
