Southampton Football Club has parted ways with manager Russell Martin following a heavy 5-0 defeat against Tottenham, leaving the team nine points adrift of safety in the Premier League.

Russell Martin was appointed as the manager of Southampton in June 2023 and successfully guided the team to promotion through the Championship play-offs. However, the Saints have struggled in the Premier League, securing only one victory while facing 13 defeats in 16 matches. Most recently, Southampton endured a heavy 5-0 loss at home to Tottenham on Sunday.

However, the defeat to Spurs marked Southampton’s 13th loss in 16 league matches this season. They have managed just one win, which came against Everton in November, and currently hold the record for the fewest goals scored in the league, with only 11.

In a statement, Southampton reflected on the season’s challenges, acknowledging the tough transition back to the Premier League, which is regarded as one of the most competitive leagues globally. The club emphasized that the board had provided clear support to Martin and his team while also being transparent about their expectations.

The statement continued, expressing gratitude for Martin and his staff’s commitment and hard work over the past 18 months, highlighting the memorable moments from last season, particularly the triumph in the play-off final.

It was also announced that Simon Rusk, the manager of Southampton’s Under-21 team, will take over on an interim basis, with his first match being a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.
