Iga Swiatek claimed her first Cincinnati Open title on Monday, defeating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4 in a gripping final.
The Polish star, a six-time Grand Slam champion, showed resilience after an early stumble, converting all six of her break-point chances to secure victory in under two hours.
Paolini fought hard but faltered at key moments, unable to capitalise on her own opportunities.
For Swiatek, it was her 11th career WTA 1000 triumph, placing her just two shy of Serena Williams’ all-time record of 13.
She also became the first woman since 2020 to win the event without dropping a set.
“This gives me a boost of confidence,” Swiatek said after lifting her 24th career title. “Not everything was perfect, but mentally I was there to play my best tennis.”
The victory moves her within 500 points of world number one Aryna Sabalenka heading into the US Open, where the top ranking will be on the line.
Swiatek, who has already tasted Wimbledon glory this summer, now turns her focus to Flushing Meadows with renewed belief and momentum.
