Dominik Szoboszlai mixed brilliance with a costly error as Liverpool eased into the FA Cup
fourth round with a 4-1 win over League One Barnsley at Anfield.
The Hungarian opened the scoring with a stunning long-range strike into the top corner before
Jeremie Frimpong doubled the lead.
However, Szoboszlai handed the visitors a lifeline with a careless backheel pass inside his own
box, allowing Adam Phillips to fire home.
Liverpool were made to work in the second half, with Barnsley growing in belief and their
manager Conor Hourihane unhappy over an unawarded penalty.
Arne Slot, also frustrated by Szoboszlai’s error, admitted the moment complicated the contest.
“I don’t think you should do that in any game,” Slot said. “It was a weird choice.”
The Reds finally pulled clear late on after Slot introduced his heavy artillery. Florian Wirtz
curled home from Hugo Ekitike’s clever flick before returning the favour in stoppage time,
crossing for Ekitike to tap in and seal the win.
Liverpool will face Brighton at home in the fourth round.
