The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted claims that the national power grid has collapsed twice in 2025, describing such reports as misleading and mischievous. In a statement posted on its official X handle on Saturday, the company assured Nigerians that there has been no system collapse this year and urged the public to disregard false information regarding the stability of the national grid.

The clarification follows reports that emerged after electricity distribution companies announced a system disturbance on February 12 at 11:34 a.m. These reports suggested that the national grid had suffered two collapses in 2025, raising concerns about the reliability of power supply across the country. However, TCN dismissed these claims, explaining that the incident was caused by a transmission line trip at the Omotosho end of the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330kV line, rather than a systemic grid failure.

According to TCN, the outage on February 12 was exacerbated by the fact that the Benin-Egbin 330kV transmission line was already undergoing scheduled maintenance at the time. This combination of factors resulted in a cascaded outage that affected power supply within the Abuja, Lagos, and Osogbo axis, but did not constitute a total system collapse. The company further clarified that the rest of the country remained unaffected and that full restoration of bulk power supply to impacted areas was promptly completed.

Emphasizing the importance of accurate reporting, TCN advised the public to be cautious of information regarding the national grid that does not originate from authorized sources. The company reiterated that the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) operates under the regulation of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and that only the National Control Centre System Operator or its designated backup, the National Supplementary Control Centre (SNCC), has the authority to provide official updates on the status of the grid.

In response to the widespread misinformation, TCN appealed to media outlets and reporters to verify facts before disseminating reports that could cause unnecessary panic among electricity consumers. The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a stable and resilient transmission network and assured Nigerians that measures are in place to prevent major disruptions to power supply.

The issue of grid stability remains a critical concern for Nigeria’s power sector, with past collapses often leading to nationwide blackouts and economic disruptions. While power transmission infrastructure faces significant challenges, TCN has continued to implement grid management strategies to improve reliability. The company reassured citizens that it remains focused on strengthening the national grid to minimize future outages and enhance electricity supply across the country.
