Mirra Andreeva capped a stunning week in Dubai by becoming the youngest-ever WTA 1000 champion, defeating Clara Tauson 7-6(1), 6-1 in Saturday’s final.
The 17-year-old Russian, who stunned three Grand Slam winners—including world No. 2 Iga Swiatek—on her way to the title, secured not only her maiden WTA 1000 crown but also a spot in the top 10, rising to No. 9 in the latest rankings.
“I set a goal to be in the top 10 by the end of the year, and now it’s only February—it’s incredible,” Andreeva said after her victory.
Tauson, 22, had been in red-hot form after eliminating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka earlier in the tournament but was overpowered by Andreeva’s poise and shot-making in a final that lasted one hour and 46 minutes.
Andreeva’s triumph sees her become the first 17-year-old in the WTA top 10 since 2007 and only the second teenager—after Rafael Nadal in 2006—to win in Dubai.
“Lastly, I want to thank me for never quitting and always believing in myself,” the rising star said with a smile, lifting the trophy after a dream week.
