Victoria Mboko’s sensational breakthrough continued as the 18-year-old Canadian booked her first WTA 1000 semi-final with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in Montreal.
The world No. 85 has electrified the home crowd, backing up her shock fourth-round victory over two-time major champion Coco Gauff with another commanding performance.
“I’m so excited to be in the semi-final here,” Mboko said. “My first time playing in Montreal has been an unreal experience and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
Mboko, who began the year ranked 333rd, is projected to break into the top 50 next week. She is the first Canadian to reach the tournament’s semi-finals since Bianca Andreescu’s 2019 triumph and the youngest since Belinda Bencic in 2015.
The teenager will face ninth seed Elena Rybakina next, after the 2022 Wimbledon champion advanced when Marta Kostyuk retired injured while trailing 6-1, 2-1.
