Afrobeats star Tems has shared what paths she might have followed if her music journey hadn’t taken off. During an interactive fan session on X, the Grammy-winning singer revealed she’d likely have pursued a career in accounting or become a mathematics teacher.
Responding to a fan’s question — “If music didn’t work, what else do you think you would be doing today?” — Tems replied, “I might have been an accountant or a mathematics teacher.”
Before her breakout into global stardom, Tems worked as a digital marketer, a job she left in January 2018 to focus fully on music. Just months later, she released her debut single Mr Rebel, which began gaining attention across Nigeria. Her international breakthrough followed in 2020 with Wizkid’s smash hit Essence, which later peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 after a Justin Bieber-assisted remix.
From digital marketing to global music charts, Tems’ journey shows how far a dream can go — and how different her world could have been.
