The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, is currently presiding over plenary amid heightened tension and a heavy security presence following a dramatic confrontation between legislative workers and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday.

Earlier in the day, DSS operatives stormed the Assembly complex, sealing off the Speaker’s office and the chamber, preventing lawmakers from gaining access. However, around 12:30 p.m., the legislators, backed by Assembly workers in a show of solidarity, forced their way into the chamber, overpowering the DSS operatives stationed at the exit door. The situation led to a heated physical confrontation between security agents and legislative staff before order was restored.

The crisis comes in the wake of an ongoing leadership tussle between Meranda and the impeached former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13 over allegations of abuse of power and corruption, has been challenging his impeachment both politically and legally. Reports indicate that his removal has divided the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, with some party leaders pushing for his reinstatement.

The presence of security forces at the Assembly complex further fueled speculation that a political power shift may be imminent. No fewer than 10 police vans were stationed at the entrance, while DSS officials were seen inside the chamber even as the plenary session commenced. The uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the House has led to heightened tensions among lawmakers and political observers.

Despite the heavy security presence, Meranda proceeded with the plenary session, demonstrating a firm stance amid the ongoing power struggle. However, with political pressure mounting and security forces actively involved, the situation at the Assembly remains unpredictable.

Observers suggest that the continued involvement of security agencies indicates deeper political maneuvering behind the scenes. With Obasa’s legal challenge still pending and divisions within the APC persisting, the battle for control of the Lagos State House of Assembly is far from over. The coming days are expected to bring further developments as both factions dig in for what is shaping up to be a prolonged political showdown.
