Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been named among the TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for 2025.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Mr. Isime Esene.
According to the publication, the TIME100 AI list highlights global leaders, innovators, thinkers, and shapers who are driving the future of artificial intelligence. The selection was based on key developments in AI over the past year, with input from industry experts and analysts.
Tijani’s inclusion, the statement noted, underscores Nigeria’s growing role in advancing AI for inclusive and sustainable development. It cited initiatives such as the National AI Strategy (NAIS), developed with contributions from over 120 Nigerian experts worldwide, and research projects exploring AI applications in healthcare, agriculture, education, and financial inclusion.
Commenting on the recognition, Dr. Tijani credited the support of global partners, including Google and the Gates Foundation, for enabling Nigeria to scale AI solutions from local innovators.
“With the support of our partners, Nigeria is providing resources, mentorship, and platforms to translate ideas into impact.
“This recognition from TIME validates our belief that Nigeria can stand as a global leader in the responsible and inclusive deployment of AI. My commitment remains clear: to ensure AI drives innovation and contributes to building a $1 trillion economy as envisioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.
The minister added that the honour reaffirms Nigeria’s resolve to leverage AI not only to boost productivity but also to create opportunities for citizens while advancing responsible technology on the global stage.
