Tinubu, Atiku Lead Tributes as Nigerians Rally Around Joshua After Fatal Crash

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other prominent
Nigerians have sent messages of condolence to British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua
following a fatal road accident in Makun, Ogun State, that claimed two lives.
The Ogun and Lagos State governments confirmed that Joshua is in stable condition and
receiving medical care at a specialised hospital in Lagos.
In a joint statement, both states said the former two-time heavyweight champion was promptly
evacuated from the scene and is under close observation.
President Tinubu described the incident as a profound tragedy, offering prayers for the deceased
and Joshua’s recovery.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan
Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” Tinubu said.
“This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season. May God grant you a speedy
recovery and repose to the souls of the departed.”
The President later revealed he had spoken directly with Joshua and his family. “I have spoken
with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates, Kevin
Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
AJ assured me he is receiving the best possible care,” Tinubu wrote, adding that Ogun State
Governor Dapo Abiodun was present at the hospital.
Atiku also expressed sadness over the crash. “I stand in full solidarity with him during this
difficult moment and pray for his swift and complete recovery,” he said, while extending
condolences to the families of the victims.
Peter Obi similarly conveyed his concern, describing the incident as troubling and praying for
eternal rest for the deceased.
