President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated a newly constructed military barracks in Asokoro, Abuja, named the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks. The facility, which was officially commissioned on Thursday, is designed to address accommodation challenges faced by the Nigerian Army and will house 614 personnel.
The state-of-the-art barracks comprises a mix of residential quarters, including 16 major-general quarters, 34 brigadier-general quarters, 60 flats for majors and colonels, and another 60 flats for lieutenants and captains. Additionally, there are 180 flats for senior non-commissioned officers and 264 flats for personnel ranked corporal and below. The complex also includes worship centres, sports facilities, and a dedicated powerhouse to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), emphasized the significance of naming the barracks after President Tinubu, citing his administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of military personnel.
“This naming is to give honour to whom honour is due,” Oluyede remarked. “The president has demonstrated unwavering commitment to addressing the welfare and operational needs of the Nigerian Army, particularly in tackling accommodation deficits.”
The COAS commended the contributions of past army chiefs, Faruk Yahaya and the late Taoreed Lagbaja, for their roles in initiating and advancing the project. He acknowledged their visionary leadership and praised their efforts in laying the groundwork for the completion of the barracks.
“The project being commissioned today represents phases one and two of the original plan,” Oluyede noted. “It is a testament to the commitment and resilience of the Nigerian Army leadership and the federal government in prioritizing the welfare of our personnel.”
The barracks will provide accommodations for 170 officers and 444 soldiers, along with their families. The facility is expected to significantly improve the living standards of military personnel and enhance their readiness and morale.
Oluyede expressed optimism about the future, stating, “I am very confident that we can achieve our long-term goals with continued support from the federal government and other stakeholders.”
The commissioning of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the welfare and operational efficiency of the Nigerian Army, setting a new standard for military infrastructure in the country.
