President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari of his administration’s commitment to preserving the late leader’s legacies.
The President made this pledge on Friday when he paid a solidarity visit to the Buhari family residence in Kaduna.
He was warmly received by Buhari’s widow, Aisha, their eldest son, Yusuf, and other relatives and close associates.
Speaking during the visit, President Tinubu said the entire nation shares in the family’s grief, describing Buhari’s passing as a loss not just to his loved ones but to the country as a whole.
“We are here to assure you that we share in your grief and in your pain,” he said. “A loss in flesh is not a loss in spirit. The spirit that he left with us is one of hard work, dedication, patriotism, and honesty, and we are committed to upholding it.
“We assure you and the entire family that we will continue with our leader’s legacy and the mark he made for Nigeria. We will remain on the path of honesty, integrity, and great character that he imbued in us.
“May God help Nigeria and keep us united in the promised land.”
In an emotional response, Aisha Buhari expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and his administration for standing by the family during their moment of grief. She described the visit as a source of comfort and strength.
“I would like to thank you once again, Mr. President, the First Lady, and the wife of the Vice President for standing by me and my family,” she said. Aisha further urged Nigerians to emulate her late husband’s virtues of honesty, integrity, and justice, praying for peace and unity in the country as well as God’s guidance for President Tinubu in carrying on Buhari’s legacy.
President Tinubu was accompanied on the visit by top government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and the governors of Kwara, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq; Yobe, Mai Mala Buni; Borno, Babagana Zulum; and Sokoto, Ahmed Aliyu. Also in the entourage were Minister of Finance Wale Edun, Minister of Budget and Planning Atiku Bagudu, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
Earlier in the day, President Tinubu attended the wedding of Nasirudeen Abdulaziz Yari, son of Senator Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara West, who wedded Safiyya Shehu Idris at the historic Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna. The President, accompanied by senior government officials, formally received the groom’s hand-in-marriage after the bride’s representative, Ibrahim Ashiru, confirmed the payment of the N1 million dowry.
Tinubu congratulated both families for upholding noble traditions and urged the newlyweds to build their home on a foundation of faith, love, and mutual respect.
The event was attended by dignitaries from across the country, including traditional rulers, political leaders, and business executives. It was marked by prayers for the couple, the President, and the nation, offered by renowned cleric Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau and the Chief Imam of the mosque, Dr. Muhammad Suleiman.
