President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on new military officers to take up the mantle of defending Nigeria’s economic integrity, warning that unchecked security threats could push the country into collapse.
The president delivered the charge Saturday during the combined passing-out parade for cadets of the 72nd Regular Course across the Army, Navy, Air Force, Short Service Course, and Branch Commission Course at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna.
Speaking via a representative, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu emphasized that the armed forces must remain vigilant in countering terrorists and insurgents whose ultimate goal, he said, is to derail the nation’s developmental progress through violence and instability.
“You must never at any time lose sight of the vision of the founding fathers of our dear nation, irrespective of the multiple complex security challenges facing our nation today,” he told the new officers.
He underscored that the military’s role is not just tactical but missioned with safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interest.
According to the speech, insurgents aim not just at land or lives, but at undermining trust in institutions, discouraging investment, and eroding public confidence in the state.
Thus, the military must stand as a bulwark not only against physical attacks, but against economic destabilisation.
At the parade, over 472 cadets were commissioned into service: 218 to the Army, 135 to the Navy, 119 to the Air Force, with the remainder drawn from short service and branch commission courses.
Six of the cadets were specially honoured for excelling in academics, military training, and extracurricular pursuits.
