Tottenham End Trophy Drought with Europa League Triumph Over Manchester United

Spurs End Trophy

Tottenham ended a 17-year wait for silverware as Brennan Johnson’s 42nd-minute goal sealed a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final at San Mamés.

The win delivered Ange Postecoglou his first trophy as Spurs boss, fulfilling a pre-season promise in just his second campaign.

Despite uncertainty surrounding his future, the Australian etched his name into club history alongside European-winning managers Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.

Johnson’s decisive strike came in a first half where Spurs showed greater purpose.

United responded after the break, with Rasmus Højlund’s header cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven and Luke Shaw denied late by a superb Vicario save.

However, they lacked the attacking sharpness to recover from the early blow.

Rúben Amorim’s decision to start Mason Mount over Alejandro Garnacho drew criticism, while Bruno Fernandes was largely ineffective.

With United heading into their final league fixture after one of their worst campaigns in decades, questions over Amorim’s long-term suitability will intensify.

Spurs, meanwhile, not only secured a European trophy but also guaranteed a Champions League return and a £100 million windfall crowning a remarkable night in Bilbao for the North London side.
