Tottenham’s Europa League push suffered a major blow on Wednesday as Ange Postecoglou confirmed James Maddison will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

The midfielder was forced off after scoring in last week’s 3-1 semi-final first-leg win over Bodo/Glimt and has now been ruled out following medical tests. It’s yet another injury setback in a season riddled with fitness issues for the struggling London side.

Captain Son Heung-min will also miss Thursday’s return leg in Norway due to a foot problem, though striker Dominic Solanke has been passed fit.

“Madders tweaked his knee in the first leg so he is out and will miss the rest of this season,” Postecoglou said. “He’s been a big part of our run in Europe, so it’s disappointing for him and for us. But it’s been the story of our season.”

Tottenham, who haven’t won a trophy since lifting the UEFA Cup in 1984, are clinging to European hopes while floundering in 16th place domestically. Postecoglou’s future remains uncertain, with speculation mounting over a potential summer exit.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario insisted the squad is prepared to adapt once again. “We will not have Sonny and Madders tomorrow, but it is on us. The whole squad needs to be ready.”

The second leg kicks off Thursday evening, with Spurs aiming to reach their first European final in over two decades.
