Inter Milan remain on course for a historic treble after booking their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a 4-3 aggregate win over Bayern Munich, following a dramatic 2-2 draw at a rain-soaked San Siro.
Despite challenging weather conditions and a fierce challenge from Bayern, goals from Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard within three second-half minutes gave Inter the edge after Harry Kane had levelled the tie earlier in the night.
Eric Dier’s late header earned Bayern a draw on the night, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the first-leg deficit.
“We don’t give up, we have personality and heart and intelligence,” said Inter captain Martinez. “We were definitely on the back foot at times today but we showed again that we can do great things.”
Inter, who last won the treble under Jose Mourinho in 2010, are still in the hunt for all three major trophies.
They lead Serie A and are also into the Coppa Italia semi-finals, where they will face city rivals AC Milan.
Up next in Europe is a heavyweight clash with Barcelona, a team Inter famously beat at this stage in 2010 on their way to lifting the trophy in Madrid. Martinez believes the ambition has never wavered.
“We think about winning everything at the start of every season, because if we don’t then we shouldn’t play this sport. That’s our mentality,” he said.
Inter will host the second leg of the semi-final at the San Siro on May 6, hoping to return to the final for the second time in three years.
