Panic swept through the popular Balogun Market on Lagos Island on Wednesday following a violent clash that reportedly claimed at least two lives.

Videos circulating on social media captured the chaos. In one clip, a man believed to have been attacked with a machete lies motionless on the ground. Another video shows a suspect, stripped naked, being lynched by a mob.

The exact cause of the unrest remains unclear. While some eyewitnesses linked the violence to a cult-related confrontation, others suggested it was triggered by a dispute between Yoruba and Igbo traders.

As the clashes intensified, traders quickly shut their shops, and pedestrians fled the area in search of safety.

By press time, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident, though eyewitnesses confirmed that operatives were later deployed to restore calm.
