Three United States-based human rights and self-determination advocacy organizations—Advocates for Victims of Injustice and Discrimination (AVID), Rising Sun, and Ambassadors for Self-Determination—have raised concerns about recent remarks by President Bola Tinubu relating to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
They warn that these comments could prejudice perceptions surrounding the unresolved legal status of IPOB and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a joint statement released on Thursday, the groups called on Nigerian authorities to focus their efforts on combating violent actors responsible for killings and displacements in various parts of the country.
They emphasized that all government actions must adhere to due process and respect human rights.
Regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s detention, the groups urged that it be reviewed according to existing court decisions and legal standards.
They expressed worry that prolonged detention without resolution, compounded by inflammatory public rhetoric, might have unintended consequences for public trust and national stability.
Additionally, the rights advocates appealed to the United States Congress, the U.S. Department of State, and international stakeholders to closely monitor Nigeria’s governance and human rights practices.
