Aston Villa returned to De Kuip, the scene of their 1982 European Cup triumph, and left with another famous victory as they beat Robin van Persie’s Feyenoord 2-0 in the UEFA Europa League.

The Dutch side started fast, with Sem Steijn and Anis Hadj Moussa both testing Marco Bizot, while Ayase Ueda saw a header ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Villa survived those scares, and after Ollie Watkins was denied by a last-ditch clearance, the visitors finally found their rhythm.

Emiliano Buendia broke the deadlock just after the hour, curling home a precise strike into the far corner after Boubacar Kamara’s clever pass.

Substitute Donyell Malen then caused chaos in the Feyenoord box, with John McGinn pouncing to double the lead.

From there, Unai Emery’s men controlled the contest and saw out a third straight group-stage win, while Van Persie’s side were left with two defeats from two and an uphill climb in their European campaign.
