Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived back in Nigeria following a week of international engagements in New York and Germany, during which he represented President Bola Tinubu at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

According to his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima delivered the Nigerian national statement at UNGA, where he called for sweeping reforms at the United Nations to better reflect contemporary global dynamics.

He also advocated for Africa’s sovereignty over its mineral resources, estimated at some $700 billion, urging that the continent have full control over its own wealth.

During his diplomatic sojourn, Shettima held a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, during which he pressed Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

In Germany, he engaged with international stakeholders, including the Gates Foundation and other development partners, to explore strategic collaborations.

He also used the platform to spotlight Nigeria’s energy transition potential, showcasing investment opportunities of roughly $200 billion to global investors.

Additionally, Shettima reached out to the Nigerian diaspora community in Germany, pledging stronger involvement of Nigerians abroad in national policy and development.

The Vice-President’s office described his return as the conclusion of a strategic diplomatic mission meant to advance Nigeria’s interests on the world stage and deepen partnerships toward growth and development.
