The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) begins tomorrow in Morocco, with Nigeria’s Super Falcons eager to secure a record-extending tenth continental title and a share of significantly increased prize money.

The Confederation of African Football has doubled the winner’s purse to one million dollars and raised the total tournament prize pool to 3.475 million dollars, underlining its drive to elevate women’s football across the continent.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the decision is intended to improve conditions for players and staff and to reflect the rising stature of the women’s game.

“The one hundred percent increase in the prize money for the winner of WAFCON Morocco 2024 and the forty-five percent total increase in the prize money of the competition should contribute to improving the salaries of women football players, coaches, and other employees,” Motsepe said.

The runner-up will now receive five hundred thousand dollars, while the teams finishing third and fourth will earn three hundred fifty thousand dollars and three hundred thousand dollars respectively.

Even group-stage teams stand to gain, with third-place finishers receiving one hundred fifty thousand dollars and fourth-placed sides one hundred twenty-five thousand dollars each.

Having won nine of the previous twelve editions, Nigeria’s Super Falcons enter the tournament as favourites.

However, with the stakes higher than ever, both in terms of prestige and financial rewards, they face fierce competition from rising teams across the continent.

As WAFCON 2024 kicks off, the Super Falcons will be striving not just for glory, but for a victory that could transform the future of women’s football in Nigeria and Africa.
