In the heart of Lekki, Lagos, the sun rose gently on Saturday, December 7, 2024, casting a warm glow over the Chevron Neighbourhood. The air buzzed with excitement as members of the Waka Community International Foundation gathered for their weekly walking session, but this Saturday was different. It was not just about exercise; it was a day to honor a remarkable individual – Chief Jerry Uzo Okaro, who had just celebrated his 73rd birthday earlier in the week, December 3rd precisely.  Chief jerry is an amazing septuagenarian and a great inspiration to all.

As the community assembled, the scent of fresh morning air mingled with the anticipation of camaraderie. Families, friends, and neighbours, all clad in their vibrant sport wears, exchanged greetings and smiles. The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter and the rhythmic sound of sneakers hitting the pavement, but the underlying current was one of deep respect and admiration for a man who had inspired many.

Pa Jerry, a stalwart member of the Waka community, stood at the forefront, his face beaming with joy. His journey through life has been a testament to the values the foundation promotes: walking, healthy eating, and ensuring adequate rest. With a heart as big as his smile, he has always been an advocate for wellness, encouraging those around him to embrace a healthier lifestyle.

As the group commenced their walk, the sound of footsteps created a harmonious symphony, a tribute to unity and shared purpose. The participants chatted animatedly, sharing stories and healthy tips, all while keeping pace with one another. It felt as if each step was a nod to the wisdom and discipline that Pa Jerry embodied.

After the walk, the community gathered to take a group photograph and also held a small celebration party for Chief Jerry Okaro. As the festivities began, the community members took turns sharing their stories about Pa Jerry. Each tale was a thread woven into the rich tapestry of his life – tales of his unwavering commitment to wellness, his infectious laughter, and his ability to uplift spirits even on the toughest of days. It became clear that Pa Jerry was more than just a member; he was a beacon of hope and positivity.

In his remarks, Mr. Lawrence Mba, the Founder and President of Waka Community International Foundation, described Chief Jerry as a committed member of the community who has taken part in every organized “wakathon.” He highlighted Chief Jerry as a tremendous source of inspiration for everyone. Additionally, he noted that Pa Jerry not only started but also completed each wakathon, which is truly remarkable considering his age.

As the day drew to a close, community members gathered around Pa Jerry, presenting him with a beautiful cake, gift and a heartfelt message of appreciation.

The event not only celebrated Pa Jerry’s milestone but also reinforced the spirit of the Waka community. It was a reminder that together, they are stronger, healthier, and more vibrant. As the sun set over Lekki, the members left with their hearts full, inspired to continue walking the path of wellness, each step echoing the legacy of a remarkable man.
