Wakathon 2026: A Journey to Wellness in Honor of Dr. Alakija
The Waka Community International Foundation, in collaboration with Q-Life Family Clinic and Health Emergency Initiative (HEI), successfully hosted the 2026 Wakathon, a global wellness walk that took place on March 28. This year’s event, themed “Let’s Waka with Q-Life and HEI,” marked a significant milestone as the sixth edition of the initiative and a tribute to the late Dr. Adetokunbo Alakija, a respected figure in public health advocacy.
The walk commenced from the Catholic Church of Divine Mercy along Admiralty Way in Lekki Phase One, with thousands of participants in Lagos and supporters from over 48 countries joining virtually. Sir Lorenz Mba, founder of the Waka Community International Foundation, emphasized the event’s dual purpose: honoring Dr. Alakija’s legacy while promoting preventive health practices.
“This is not just a walk; it’s a commitment to our health and wellness,” Mba stated, highlighting the importance of regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and emotional well-being. He encouraged participants to adopt sustainable health practices, underscoring that prevention is more cost-effective than treatment.

In a vibrant atmosphere filled with music, refreshments, and free medical screenings provided by the Q-Life medical team, participants engaged in a community-driven experience. The event featured branded T-shirts and a lively DJ, making it a celebration of health and solidarity.
The Wakathon is part of a broader initiative to instill a culture of wellness, with the Waka International App rewarding users for their walking efforts. The campaign’s message is clear: “A healthy nation is a wealthy one.” Mba reiterated the five pillars of preventive healthcare: regular walking, healthy eating, hydration, adequate sleep, and strength training, particularly for those aged 45 and above.
Pascal Achunine, founder of HEI, echoed these sentiments, urging Nigerians to prioritize their health amid rising lifestyle pressures. “Preventive healthcare is about sustaining routines that support both body and mind,” he said, advocating for mindful living and balanced nutrition.
The event also garnered support from various sponsors and partners, including Pocari Sweat and The Beacon NG, with special thanks given to the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) and the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF) for their contributions.
As the day concluded, the organizers expressed gratitude to all participants and supporters, reinforcing the message that collective action is essential for building a healthier society. The Wakathon continues to grow, uniting individuals across the globe with a common goal of transforming lives.
