The All Progressives Congress (APC) has signalled that it would be open to negotiating a possible defection by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, but only if he formally approaches the party.

This was stated by APC National Publicity Secretary Caleb Duru on Sunday.

Speaking with reporters in Abuja, Duru made clear that until Governor Fubara makes a concrete overture, APC would not preemptively reach out or make decisions on his behalf.

“We will make a decision if Fubara reaches out to the party,” he said, emphasising that any consideration would follow proper channels.

The statement comes amid swirling speculations that Fubara, currently under pressure following internal crises within his ruling party in Rivers State, is exploring his political options ahead of the 2027 general elections. Some political watchers believe the governor’s next move could reshape power dynamics in the South-South region.

Duru downplayed any perception of urgency, adding that the APC is “open to dialogue” but that defection is not automatic simply based on speculation. “It must be a respectful, transparent process,” he remarked.

As of now, the APC has made no formal commitment to welcome Fubara, and no timeline has been given for when a decision might be made.

Meanwhile, speculation continues in political circles about whether Fubara will indeed seek defection, and how the move could affect alliances ahead of the upcoming electoral contests.
