WHAT MAKES A GOOD PROPMT?

July 4, 2025

Prompt engineering is about how we ask AI to do things whether it’s writing, answering questions, solving problems, or generating ideas. It matters because the quality of your prompt directly affects the quality of the AI’s response.

If the instructions are vague or confusing, the answer might be off-topic, too general, or not useful. But when you give the AI a clear and detailed prompt, it understands exactly what you want, and the result is often much better.

Think of it like talking to a person, if you give someone clear steps and enough background, they can do the task well. But if you’re not specific, they might guess and get it wrong. The same goes for AI, your prompt should be detailed and well structured so that the AI can understand the situation, know what to do and work with the tone of your writing.

What Makes a Good Prompt?

A good prompt is clear, detailed, and easy for the AI to understand. When your prompt includes the right parts, you’ll get better, more accurate, and more useful results. Here are the key elements that make a prompt effective:

1. Background Information
Start by giving the AI some context about the task. This helps it understand the situation better. For example, if you want help writing an email to your boss, mention that it’s a professional message, what the topic is (like a project update or a leave request), and any other details that matter.

2. Clear Instructions
Be specific about what you want. Some prompts are not clear like “write something about dogs” can lead to general answers. Instead, say something like, “Write a 200-word article explaining why dogs are great pets for families.” The more specific you are, the better the AI can respond.

3.Give Examples
If you have a particular style or tone in mind (such as formal, friendly, persuasive, etc.), give a short example. Showing what you want helps the AI copy the style and structure you need.

4. Rules or Limitations
Let the AI know if there’s anything it should avoid or any limits it must follow. For example, you might say “Avoid using complex technical terms” or “Keep it under 100 words.” These rules help the AI stay on track.

5. Format
Tell the AI how you want the output to be delivered. Do you want a paragraph, bullet points, a numbered list, or maybe even a table? Clearly stating the format saves you time and keeps everything organized.
