Nollywood actress Wumi Toriola has opened up about her recent public apology to senior colleague Afeez Owo, saying she did it out of respect for tradition and cultural values.
The actress had sparked controversy in September after criticising Afeez Owo for suggesting that the fiery characters she plays in movies reflect her real-life personality. Afeez had described her as someone who “tolerates no nonsense and reacts when pushed,” prompting Wumi to call his remarks “rubbish” while questioning why such conversations end up on podcasts.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Wumi approached Afeez Owo at Odunlade Adekola’s movie premiere and publicly apologised—kneeling before him and saying, “I’m sorry, sir. Please forgive me.”
In an Instagram post following the incident, Wumi explained the gesture, describing herself as a “true ambassador of culture” who believes elders should be treated with respect at all times.
“I chose to apologise to our legend because I am a true ambassador of culture, and even in anger, our elders should be off limits,” she wrote. “Our elders deserve calm waters, not raised voices. I have chosen peace.”
She also thanked Afeez Owo for accepting her apology, adding, “To our fans and friends—no more grudges. I have chosen peace.”
The heartfelt reconciliation has earned praise across social media, with many commending Wumi for prioritising humility and cultural values in resolving the dispute.
