Top seed Taylor Fritz was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 by fellow American Ben Shelton in the
ATP Tour’s Dallas Open final in Texas on Sunday, as the second seed saved three
match points to clinch the fourth title of his career.
Fritz looked in complete control after taking the opening set and moved to within a point
of victory at 4-5 in the deciding set, earning two match points at 15-40 on Shelton’s
serve.
He later created a third opportunity, but was unable to convert as Shelton held firm to
level at 5-5.
The momentum swung in the next game when Fritz double-faulted for the first time in
the match to hand Shelton three break points at 0-40.
Shelton seized the chance, broke for 6-5 and then served out the match in one hour and
52 minutes.
Fritz later admitted the contest had been enjoyable until the closing stages but
acknowledged that Shelton played the big points better.
Shelton described it as a crazy match and praised Fritz’s fight through injury setbacks
this season.
