Arsenal’s hopes of landing Martin Zubimendi have reportedly taken a major blow, with the Real Sociedad midfielder said to be prioritising a summer move to Real Madrid.
The Spain international turned down interest from Liverpool last year in order to stay at his boyhood club, but reports now suggest he is open to a new challenge ahead of the 2025–26 season.
Arsenal, under new sporting director Andrea Berta, have identified the 26-year-old as a key target to strengthen their midfield, especially with the futures of Jorginho and Thomas Partey uncertain as their contracts near expiry.
However, according to French journalist Santi Aouna, Zubimendi is leaning towards joining Real Madrid, who are also believed to be seriously interested.
The Spanish giants have reportedly outlined their long-term plans for the midfielder and are prepared to meet his €60 million (£51 million) release clause.
Zubimendi, known for his composure in deep areas and ability to control the tempo of games, has drawn comparisons to Toni Kroos, whose retirement at the end of last season left a void in Madrid’s midfield.
His ranking among La Liga’s best for progressive passes and final-third distribution further enhances his appeal to the Bernabéu hierarchy.
Should Madrid step up their interest, Arsenal may be forced to turn their attention elsewhere in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive summer transfer battle.
