Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, have entered the final phase of their build-up to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, training at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project in Abuja under head coach Aliyu Zubairu.

Head coach Aliyu Zubairu, overseeing the last of a three-stage programme, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, describing preparations as being “at top gear.”

The squad features a mix of home-based players and Nigerian talents abroad, although some overseas invitees are still awaiting club clearance to join camp.

One player under close watch is David Stockbrink of Fortuna Sittard, who missed the Africa Cup of Nations through injury but has now linked up with the squad.

Zubairu confirmed he is being assessed during training as competition for places intensifies.

Reflecting on the team’s chances in Chile, the coach said Nigeria could be genuine contenders if their strongest players are released.

“If we are able to get our best legs, I believe Nigeria should rest assured this team is going to prove their worth,” he noted.

The U-20 World Cup begins on September 27.
