Corentin Tolisso was the driving force behind Lyon’s dominance, scoring a hat-trick as Les Gones raced into a 3-0 lead before half-time through Abner, Tolisso and Moussa Niakhaté’s penalty.
Maccabi Tel Aviv never recovered, and their hopes completely vanished after the break when Tolisso struck twice more and substitute Adam Karabec added a sixth.
A late second yellow card for Sagiv Yehezkel summed up a miserable night for the visitors, who failed to record a single shot on target.
