Newcastle United powered into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League after
completing a 9-3 aggregate demolition of Qarabag FK, winning 3-2 on the night at St
James’ Park.
Holding a commanding 6-1 advantage from the first leg, Newcastle wasted little time
asserting control. Sandro Tonali struck his first Champions League goal before
Joelinton volleyed home 80 seconds later to end any lingering doubt.
Qarabag responded with pride. Camilo Duran reduced the deficit early in the second
half, but Sven Botman restored the two-goal cushion almost immediately with a
powerful header.
Elvin Cafarguliyev added another from close range after a saved penalty, yet the tie
had long been beyond reach.
The visitors’ campaign ends with an unwanted record of 30 goals conceded, the
most in a single season since the competition’s 1992/93 rebrand.
For Newcastle, it was a fourth successive home win in the tournament and a sixth
overall victory this season, matching their club record in a Champions League
campaign. A last-16 meeting with FC Barcelona or Chelsea FC now awaits.
