Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has inaugurated five state-of-the-art transport terminals and rolled out 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit buses, marking a major milestone in his administration’s plan to build a modern, multimodal transport system.
Speaking on Thursday during the commissioning ceremonies, Mbah also launched the Enugu State Modern Transport System, complete with a digital platform and more than 80 new bus shelters across the state. The terminals commissioned include: Holy Ghost Terminal 1 (Enugu Central Station 1) – for inter-state transport, Holy Ghost Terminal 2 (Enugu Central Station 2) – for inter-city services, Nsukka Terminal (Nsukka Central Station), Abakpa Nike Terminal (Abakpa Central Station),and Gariki Terminal (Gariki Central Station).
The projects, part of the administration’s Integrated Five-Terminal Transport Infrastructure, Phase 1, are key to Mbah’s goal of growing Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
The new terminals boast food courts, banking halls, motels, shops, CNG refilling stations, and cinemas.
Holy Ghost Terminals 1 and 2 are linked by a 400-metre sky bridge, the longest in Nigeria. The buses come equipped with free Wi-Fi and security systems.
Mbah noted that the Holy Ghost area, once notorious for traffic congestion and disorder, has been transformed into an organised transport hub. “Our promise from day one was to build a world-class transport system that moves people, connects businesses, and positions Enugu as a model of modern governance and sustainable growth,” he said.
The governor described the terminals and CNG Bus Mass Transit Scheme as “central pillars” of his multimodal transport agenda, integrating road, rail, air, and waterways. He said the initiative is already creating over 20,000 jobs across bus rapid transit (BRT) services, hybrid city taxis, airport operations, ride-hailing, and support services.
Mbah explained that the Enugu Transport Management System will feature an e-ticketing platform to curb corruption, ensure transparency, and guarantee that every payment is accounted for. “A single valid ticket will give commuters access to all participating buses, and comprehensive insurance will cover both assets and passengers,” he assured.
The governor expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for supporting Enugu’s development, citing the concession of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport as a key boost to the state’s aviation and economic ambitions.
Programme Director/CEO of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi (represented by Engr. Tari Mayor-Bright), praised Mbah’s efforts, describing the project as “a bold step towards cleaner, safer, and more affordable transportation.”
The Managing Director of Planet Project Construction Company, Biodun Otunola, hailed the simultaneous construction of five terminals as “unprecedented in Nigeria’s history,” attributing it to strong political will and thorough research.
Local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and market leaders across Enugu North, Nsukka, Enugu East, and Enugu South LGAs lauded the project, calling it a catalyst for economic growth and improved mobility.
