Atletico Madrid powered past Club Brugge KV with a 4-1 second-leg victory to seal a
7-4 aggregate triumph in their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off tie
Alexander Sorloth proved the difference on the night.
The Norwegian striker opened the scoring midway through the first half, spinning his
marker before firing an effort that squirmed past Simon Mignolet.
Brugge responded bravely and levelled on aggregate when Joel Ordonez turned
home from close range after Brandon Mechele’s flick-on.
Hugo Vetlesen then came close to completing the turnaround, but Jan Oblak
produced a crucial save to keep the sides level at the break.
Atletico regained control early in the second half as Johnny Cardoso rifled in his first
Champions League goal from distance.
Sorloth struck again after neat build-up play involving substitutes before completing
his hat-trick from a late corner to end the contest emphatically.
The result extends Atletico’s unbeaten run in regulation time of Champions League
knockout matches to 20 games (W13, D7).
Diego Simeone’s side will now face either Liverpool FC or Tottenham Hotspur in the
last 16.
