Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko produced the performance of her young career on Saturday, stunning top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 event in Montreal.
The 18-year-old wild card thrilled the home crowd with fearless shot-making, breaking the reigning French Open champion three times and saving all four break points she faced.
Mboko stormed through the opening set in 25 minutes and held her nerve in the second, closing out the match after just 62 minutes on court.
Gauff, who had battled service issues throughout the week, squandered four break chances and double-faulted on match point, allowing Mboko to seal a landmark victory.
The Canadian teen will now face either China’s Zhu Lin or Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the last eight as she continues her breakout run on home soil.
