The United Kingdom, through its High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has praised the Tinubu administration’s economic and trade reforms, describing them as bold, necessary, and transformative.
During a visit to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, Montgomery emphasized that, although painful, the reforms are helping to reset Nigeria’s economy and boost trade and investment with the UK.
His remarks follow similar commendations by WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who emphasized the reforms’ importance for economic stability and long-term growth. She also urged the government to implement safety nets to ease the impact of rising living costs.
Montgomery also applauded the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), highlighting its role in empowering women across key sectors such as health, education, and humanitarian services.
He noted that the UK is closely monitoring Nigeria’s constitutional review process, particularly proposals to secure more political representation for women.
In response, the First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to advancing women’s empowerment, especially in the informal sector, and advocated for more informed female political participation.
