Zheng Marks Comeback with Win as Andreeva Advances in Doha.
Zheng Qinwen marked her return from injury with a three-set victory over Sofia Kenin at
the Qatar Open on Monday, while fifth seed Mirra Andreeva cruised into the round of
16.
The Olympic gold medallist, playing her first match since September, recovered from
losing the opening set to beat 2020 Australian Open champion Kenin 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 and
book a second-round meeting with Alycia Parks. Now ranked 26 th in the world, Zheng
fired 20 aces in an impressive season opener and said she felt her elbow was in a good
place despite the usual discomfort that comes with a comeback.
Andreeva began her campaign with a 7-6 (0), 6-1 win over Magda Linette after receiving
a first-round bye.
The day also saw notable exits, with third seed Amanda Anisimova retiring against
Karolina Pliskova and former US Open champion Emma Raducanu pulling out of her
match with Camila Osorio in the deciding set.
On Tuesday, top seeds Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina will begin their tournaments in
the round of 32, while fourth seed Coco Gauff opens her singles campaign after an
early doubles exit.
